Philosophy of St. Pancras School

The purpose of a Catholic School is to provide for the Religious Education Formation and Academic Education of the students.  Parents, through baptism, accept the responsibility of forming their children into active, informed members of the community of Faith, both by what they say and through their actions.

In choosing to send you child to St. Pancras School, we request that you thoughtfully consider the above statement.  This is our Philosophy of Catholic Education.  This must be a “lived experience” for each of our families.  We do not merely exist to be an alternative to the Public Schools or for the academic excellence.  We believe our primary reason for existence is for the Christian Formation of our students.  Together with each family, we strive to achieve our goal.

Our philosophy of “educating the whole child” addresses all the educational and formal needs of a growing child.  It challenges the student’s sense of respect and compassion for his/her fellow human beings.

St. Pancras School identifies with the teachings of Jesus.

To teach as Jesus did …

Lord, we do not know where we are going.  How can we know the way?” Jesus told him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through me.”

Regulations of New York State and the Diocese of Brooklyn:

  • Vision for attendance: Students need to come to school because they want to.  School attendance is a right and a responsibility.

  • Positive school climate: The relationship between test scores and attendance is mutually inclusive.

  • It’s the law!

  • CHRONIC LATENESS will necessitate a warning to parents.  Unresolved, this problem will necessitate further intervention by concerned authorities to find a solution to this problem.

  • During the school year, if a child is present every day, but is late – 100% attendance is forfeited.

Retention Policy

The decision to retain a student is based upon a total evaluation of the student’s growth in all areas of development.

In all grades K-8: Failure to complete school and homework assignments and projects, consistent inattention to classroom instructions and causing wasted time on task interruptions, or lack of preparedness for school assignments are criteria for retention.

Trimester Report Card

Trimester periods are from September-November, December-March, and April-June.  Grades 5-8 will have final exams in June.  INTERIM PROGRESS REPORTS will be sent home midway through each trimester to students who are in danger of failing in grades 1-8.  The first and second report card is distributed within the context of a parent-teacher conference.

Each trimester grade for the report card is based upon the following criteria:

Evaluation is neither a numerical nor letter grade rating.  Rather it is comprehension assessment of a student’s achievement arrived at after using a variety of measurement tools including:

  • Daily class work and participation

  • Homework assignment

  • Independent work or projects

  • Cooperative work or projects

  • Written tests and quizzes

Student of the Month:  Each month Student of the Month Certificates are given to two students from each homeroom in grades 1-8.  The purpose of these awards is to recognize students who are working to their potential on the following bases: setting a good example, and respecting adults, property, peers, and other students in school.

Lunchroom Procedures

No child may eat lunch in school unless a parent/guardian has completed the form requesting this priviledge!  When permission is given to eat in school, the child MUST STAY EACH DAY.  Students may not leave the school grounds to purchase lunch and they MUST remain on the school grounds throughout the entire lunch hour.  Remember to send lunch with you child, no phone calls will be made – children will be asked to share.  All students need to follow the lunchroom and school yard rules.

If you wish to have your child leave the school during lunch, a written letter from the students’ parent/guardian will be required the first week of school.  St. Pancras will not be responsible for any child who is instructed to go home for lunch.  A signed contract by both the parent/guardian and the student will be on file in the school office.  Once this contract is signed in September, the parent/guardian and child will abide to it throughout the school year.

All volunteers must sign the Register Book when entering and leaving the building. The Register Book is located in the office.  Thank you and God bless you.

Violence Tolerance Policy

WE ARE PEACE-LIVING PEOPLE; THEREFORE, there is no tolerance for weapons on school/parish property.

A student found to be in possession of a weapon on school/parish grounds will be reported to:

  1. The local precinct
  2. His/her parents
  3. The school/district superintendents

The policy will be adhered to during the school day and at school-related activities.  Depending on the immediate outcome, the student will be subject to suspension or immediate expulsion.

If suspension is the decision, the child may only return to school after professional documentation is provided ensuring that the child is not a danger to himself/herself or others; counseling will be mandatory.

ANTI-BULLYING /HARASSMENT POLICY

The school communities within the Brooklyn Diocese believe in the sanctity of human life and the inherent dignity of the human person.  We believe that all students, school employees and volunteers have a right to a safe and healthy school environment. All members of the school community, in turn, have an obligation to promote mutual respect, tolerance and acceptance. Research shows that students who learn in a safe and supportive environment succeed academically.  Students have a right to learn in an environment free of any harassment that substantially interferes with their education.

Bullying, bias-based harassment /intimidation are intentional, repeated, hurtful acts (physical, verbal, written) committed by one or more persons towards another person or persons.  It usually involves an actual or perceived imbalance of power which can be physical, emotional or verbal.

Behaviors include but are not limited to:

  • Physical: physical violence, stalking, threats, aggressive or menacing gestures, exclusion from peer groups which is intended to humiliate or isolate the target (relational bullying)
  • Verbal: taunts, teasing, derogatory language, derogatory jokes, name calling, slurs, spreading rumors
  • Written: written or graphic material including graffiti containing comments or stereotypes that are electronically written and transmitted via internet, social messaging sites, blogs, instant messaging, text messages, cell phone, webcams,.  This would also include forwarding such messages if received.  This generally constitutes cyberbullying

Reporting Procedures:

  • The targeted student, parent of a student or other students in the school (bystanders), or any school staff who believe that bullying has occurred should report the incident to the principal.
  • The principal will conduct an investigation by interviewing all parties separately.
  • The parents of all involved students will be notified.
  • If it is determined that bullying has occurred the child who bullied will be subject to disciplinary consequences
  • Parents will be advised to contact the appropriate law enforcement agency
  • Referral to counseling will be made as necessary.
  • The principal will ascertain that the offending conduct has stopped.
  • All students will be advised that retaliation against anyone who makes a report will not be tolerated and those that retaliate will be subject to disciplinary action

Drug and Alcohol Policy

St. Pancras School shares the concern of many for the availability of drugs and alcohol in our community.  The following policy will be adhered to during the school day, at school-related activities, and at all times on school/parish grounds.

Any student discovered to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be subject to the following procedures.

  1. The student’s parents will be immediately notified.
  2. Students may be referred to an outside agency or professional.  The principal must receive, on a monthly basis, written evidence that the student is receiving appropriate help for the problem.

Students found to be possessing, selling, or exchanging alcohol or drugs in school, on school property, or at school/parish-related activities will be subject to immediate expulsion
